Free Things to Do in Tasmania

tasmania shotSpending money anywhere in Australia is an easy thing to do, and that includes when traveling in the small island state of Tasmania. Like most people, life is better when you get enjoyment and adventure for free, so saving money is generally a good focus for part of a trip, if not all of it. Here is a list of some of the free things to do in the state of Tasmania.

Free Things to Do in Hobart

Hobart is Tasmania’s capital city, located on the southern side of the island.

Royal Tasmanian Botanic Gardens
These gardens are located in the Queens Domain and are the second oldest gardens in the country, dating back to 1818. Inside visitors will find unusual plant collections and even an Subantarctic Plant House. Go for a stroll or bring a picnic.

Salamanca Market
The Salamanca Market is held every Saturday in the streets of Salamanca Place. Between the hours of 8:30 am and 3 pm, come around for a bit of browsing and shopping. Listen to the buskers playin music or buy your week’s fresh fruits and veggies.

Tasman Bridge
The Tasman Bridge connects the Hobart central business district with the east, and it contains a walking path. Spend the afternoon walking across the Tasman Bridge, enjoying views of the Derwent River and some Tasmanian weather.

Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery
The Tasmanian Museum and Art Gallery is open 7 days a week with free entry. Inside visitors can get a glimpse of Tasmania’s “natural and cultural heritage,” according to the official website.

Mount Wellington
If you have a car, the drive to Mount Wellington is a mere 20 minutes from Hobart. Once there, take advantage of the summit for a picturesque view of Hobart city and the Derwent River. Bush walking trails are plentiful if you are the type of person up for a hike.

Hobart Beaches
Spending a day or just a morning or afternoon at the beach is a very free and typical Australian thing to do. While it is not known for having the best beach culture, Hobart does offer up some beaches to lounge around on in the summer months. Catching a wave is also an option if you love surfing. Head over to Clifton Beach, Long Beach, Seven Mile Beach or Short Beach.

Bellerive Beach Park
Bellerive is a quiet place to hang out outside of Hobart with great beaches. At the Bellerive Beach Park, you can relax and have a barbie, or go for a walk from Bellerive to Howrah beach along the Clarence Foreshore Trail.

Free Things to Do in Launceston

Launceston is another major city in Tasmania located on the northern shore of the island.

Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery
This Launceston museum and gallery is free to the public, 7 days a week. It holds a collection of art and artifacts that tell the story of Tasmania’s history. There’s even a planetarium inside.

Cataract Gorge Walking Trails
This two to three hour walking tour will take you from King’s Park to the Zig Zag Reserve.

Other Free Things to Do in Tasmania

Outside of the two main cities of Tasmania, you can stop off in Port Arthur, a former convict settlement with a tragic recent past. Cradle Mountain is a location that provides a great walking destination and gorgeous scenery.
