Darwin- Cavenagh Street Attractions
Cavenagh Street is two over from the Backpacker hangout/Entertainment district of Mitchell Street. Watch out for… or… check out the small “adult entertainment” district plunked right between the two (depending on your preference). There are many fun shops and cafe’s on Cavenagh- as well as the post office and a good Woolworths (“Woolies” = grocery store). Mostly a business street- here are three unique and useful places to check out…
Georges-
Coffee Shop and sandwich counter, Georges has the feel of an old time Coca Cola fountain shop. Mirrors on the wall reflect light off of gleaming glassware. This is a small place- but does have nice outdoor tables- good place to read a paper. Again- mostly a local hang out. Next to the Post office. Check out her tattoos! If she asks if you like the coffee- just say YES! (he he.)
Warehouse 73:
Next to Relish, this place has a really funny collection of everything under the sun for sale. It is a store modeled on the typical dollar variety budget stores the aussies like so well- but this one had everything including an umbrella, hat, swim wear, clothing, and new age needs section. They also had a ripper selection of koozies or stubby holders. (Ripper means really good) Good for a wander. (Aussies say stubby holders ask for a “koozie” and they will give you a “quizzical” look)
The General Store:
Across the street from Relish is The General Store. If you are planning on a few outdoor adventures and forgot to pack something- this is the place to come. This is an outdoors gear warehouse. They are well stocked with everything one would need including packs, boots, tents, insect repellent, cheap hats, hot weather sleeping bags, and hammocks that fold down into the size of a softball. I’m currently trialing one. (They are wonderful for a small person- I’m not sure how well they would fit someone over 6 feet.) A must do stop if you are in need of gear.
