You can still fly to Melbourne for the Australian Open
I play tennis for fitness – and to make my friends laugh – but I also watch professional players play tennis and sigh at the thought that I am so not talented (or don’t have the time to actually play enough to be any good). When the Australian Open started, obviously, I was glued to the sports channels and watched some of my favorite players.
Unfortunately, my schedule (and budget) doesn’t allow for any vacations on the spur of the moment. But you surely can. Australian Open ends on January 31 and let’s be honest… the most interesting matches are the semifinals and final. Why not look up flights to Australia right now, pack your bags and live your dream.
With your flight booked, it’s time to look for cheap hotels in Melbourne . Of course, those who have planned to be here for the Australian Open planned the vacation in advance, but you don’t need to worry. There are still rooms available. Be prepared to pay about AUD$84 per night in a hotel located in the heart of the city.
A much cheaper option is choosing among the many hostels in Melbourne . They book up really fast before such events, but just like in the case of hotels, it is possible to find beds. On many online booking sites you won’t be able to book a bed for tonight for example, but you can always call the hostel directly. Rates start at AUD$31 per bed per night (in dorms). Many of the hostels are located in the heart of the city or very close to all the hot spots.
If you are already in Australia, this short getaway won’t cost you too much, and you can even plan to stay after the Australian Open has ended. February falls during the summer so the weather is usually warm. Of course there are colder days when the temperature might drop to 20C but there are also hot days when the city boils at 40C. But you should also know that the heat wave usually lasts for couple of days only. So pack light: bring summer clothes and loads of sun screen. Make sure to bring your swim suit since you will probably want to catch a lovely tan as well.
