Darwin’s Own Drinking Sports Game
There’s an excellent article on BootsnAll all about the different drinking sports games around the world. It covers everything from extreme croquet to drunken golf, and you better believe it that Australia didn’t get left off this list of boozy fun activities thanks to Darwin.
Darwin, the capital of the Northern Territory located in the Top End, hosts a very special drinking sports game every year – the Darwin Lions Beer Can Regatta. The goal of the regatta is to raise funds for community projects and the likes, and the focus to do that is on the building of a boat using solely empty cans of beer (or soda). One can imagine that the preparation for the beer can regatta is one that Aussies know how to handle.
If the boat is deemed floatable, contenders compete in a big race as part of the day’s events. It occurs each winter, as it has been done since 1974, and I must add that it is during one of the best times of the year to get up north. If you’re interested in checking out this rare cultural treat, it’s simply a matter of choosing one of the many flights to Australia and hotels in Darwin. It’s never too early to start planning for the next year’s event!
