BBC rips off her bodice
Australia is stepping out of its stereotypical typecasting molds in the international television scene. Australian Natalie Mendoza comes from an Asian background and has played a number of cultural roles, but was pleased to be cast as an Aussie in BBC’s new show, Hotel Babylon.
“I though they were going to want a blonde-haired, blue-eyed Aussie-looking girl and I was really pleased that they embraced me,” she says. “They wanted something different which is actually reflective of Australia now anyway; it’s a very multicultural country. Working overseas there’s a real stereotype people have in their heads of Australians so that was a good sign that they were really wanting a modern, contemporary series.”
