Cairns Eats: Get Your Crocodile at Dundee’s
When time is limited — when you have a thousand possible things to do on your itinerary and have to pick and choose the most worthwhile — there is a restaurant in Cairns that I can recommend as a stop.
Not only is this restaurant situated right on the waterfront, just around the corner from the Cairns Shangri-La, and in the Reef Fleet Terminal strip, but it is also home to some dishes the international traveler might find a peculiar treat.
That’s right. You can get your crocodile (and your roo, emu and Barramundi) at Dundee’s as part of their bush tucker fare selection.
Choose from bite-sized crocodile satay and kangaroo skewers to whet the palette, or perhaps a smoked crocodile meat salad with mango, nuts and plum dressing is more to your liking.
When real appetites call, the Australian Fair serves up a plate of famous Australian meats: kangaroo, emu, crocodile and Barramundi fish. My favorite dish, however, would have to be one so astutely named — the Crocodile Rock. This massive platter comes with four unique meats — kangaroo, crocodile, steak and Barramundi — served up on a sizzling volcanic rock!
Dundee’s provides the backdrop for a quirky visit to Cairns, and Australia for that matter, topped off with picture-perfect views of the harbour and tropical rainforest across the water. It lets you get to the heart of experiencing Australia in a simple lunch or dinner.
Plus, Dundee’s gives you bragging rights.
Just in case your friends and family don’t believe that you indulged in such an eclectic meal, Dundee’s provides a certificate of completion to all patrons that taste the infamous kangaroo and crocodile meat and live to tell about it.
If Aussie bush tucker fails to entice, you’ll be happy to know there is a large menu of normal Australian food options that include seafood, steak, pasta and Thai salads.
