From December 29, international travellers will need to provide their checked baggage at the airline counter so that a security screener can scan bags with special equipment.
The hand-held screening device is meant to ensure explosive material is not taken into the terminal or on an aircraft in baggage.
Only a small portion of checked baggage is scanned for explosives throughout Australia but the new measures will bring Darwin Airport into line with world's best practice.
